2,500 Hours of the Same Four Walls

A 1:24 scale recreation of my home study, built during lockdown as a way of turning a far too familiar space into something worth looking at again. Scratch built primarily from balsa wood and card, with carefully recreated details drawn directly from the original room.

This is a 1:24 scale recreation of my home study, built after spending far too much time in it during lockdown. At the time it was meant to be my sanctuary. After a while, it started to feel more like… well, the only place in the world.

So I did the sensible thing and built it again, smaller.

The whole thing is scratch built, mostly from balsa wood, paper and modelling clay, with a few carefully chosen additions where it made sense. I tried to match everything as closely as possible - the layout, the furniture, even the clutter. The pictures on the walls are scaled-down versions of my actual photos and artwork, and the computer setup is fully recreated (including all the wiring, which felt like a commitment at the time).

Some details took more effort than they probably should have. I remember spending hours trawling auction sites just to find a single bead that looked right for the hamster’s ball. The cage itself is made from wire and plastic tubing, just like the real one.

It’s all there, the plants, the desk, the slightly overfull bin, the cutting mat. The only thing missing is a tiny version of this model sitting inside it, which felt like it might be taking things a bit too far. Although, technically, that would only be 1:576 scale.
