Marder Vs Munchers

A post-apocalyptic diorama reimagining a "Marder I" as a scavenged survival vehicle, pushing through a zombie-infested city overrun with rats. Built using a mix of 3D-printed figures, scratch-built elements, and heavily reworked components.

This started with a "Marder I" tank destroyer kit - basically a WWII vehicle built by sticking a big anti-tank gun on a small, lightly armoured chassis and hoping for the best. That idea stuck with me. If that’s how you solve problems in a war, what happens when things get even worse?

In this version, the logic hasn’t improved - it’s just got scrappier. The base has been turned into something closer to a rusted tractor, with armour replaced by whatever was lying around: old shop signs, adverts, bits of metal that probably used to mean something else. It’s less “engineered” and more “that’ll do.”

I wanted it to feel like a moment caught in passing. Two survivors, somewhere between practical and unhinged, rolling past a compound that has very clearly not stayed contained.

Behind the fence, things are still trying to get out. They don’t look in a hurry, which somehow makes it worse.

And then there are the rats. Easily my favourite part. At first you don’t really notice them... same colours as the ground... but the longer you look, the more you realise there are loads of them. Little red eyes everywhere. It becomes less of a detail and more of a problem.

The whole piece is built from a mix of the original kit, 3D-printed figures, and a lot of scratch-built additions. The messier details, like the… less pleasant organic bits... were sculpted by hand (rolled clay and a comb does a surprisingly good job, if you’re wondering). I’ve packed it with small things to find, so it hopefully rewards a proper look rather than just a quick glance.
